About Illinois

Illinois is also known as "The Prairie State", however it's largest city with a population close to 3,000,000, Chicago, is the third largest in the U.S., only behind Los Angeles and New York. Illinois has one of the busiest airports in the world (O'Hare). An interesting factoid is that 3 of our presidents were elected while living in Illinois (Lincoln, Grant, Obama). The state slogan" is: The land of Lincoln.

Illinois is the 25th state in land mass, and a total population of almost 13,000,000. The Chicago Metropolitan Market (Chicagoland) dominates the Northern Illinois area. The entire state is about 70% White and 15% African American. The population currently increases by about 150,000 births each year.

The land is relatively flat and our thrust is in the direction of commercial real estate and office buildings of which 110 of them are located in Chicago. At the same time, agriculture is central to the state's economy - it's not all business. Other major cities are Champaign, Peoria, Rockford and Springfield. In addition to Agriculture we find a variety of service industries plus manufacturing (ex: Deere & Company), Finance (ex: Chicago Board of Trade), and mining.

Shared professional office space is advertised by lookingforspace.com throughout the state, however the bulk of our active listings for commercial space are in Chicago and the Chicagoland suburbs. The listings are predominantly from law firms for attorneys, however there are listings from doctors and dentists that have excess medical office space for sublease.

The individual office rental market is competitive in Illinois and one of the benefits of our listings are that we display both the size (sq. ft.) and rental ($/month) for each listing so that the consumer can make a valid comparison between the rentals that they find through a space search on our website.

Illinois is a hub for transportation on a national basis. Amtrak has a major hub here and the state is a center for the national interstate highway system. The largest office building in the state is Willis Tower. It is 110 Stories and is the 2nd tallest building in the US today. The Aon center is 83 Stories and is the 7th tallest building in the country. 875 North Michigan Avenue at 100 stories is the third tallest. Remember height is not calculated by the number of stories, but rather the height from the top of the structure to the sidewalk below. As an aside, the building with the largest area in the state is the John Deere distribution center in Milan, Illinois. It covers 2,650,000 sq. ft. of space. There is an automobile assembly plant in Normal, Illinois that covers about 2,000,000 square feet, and there is also a Jeep assembly plant the same size in Belvedere, Illinois.

Our focus in terms of buildings will be on office buildings that have tenants with extra offices for rent. Most of the office space available for sublease in the state will be found in Chicago which is home to many law firms. In fact, the city has 4800 law firms (including solo practitioners) which leads to a pretty good demand for shared legal office space.
