About Washington

Washington D.C. is bounded by Virginia, Maryland and the Potomac River.  It is the seat of government with all 3 branches located here.  D.C. serves as the country's museum and at the same time the metropolitan area is home to the bulk of federal workers.  While tourism is a big component of the economy, along with Civil Service, the service sector and R&D also play major roles. Banking in particular, with proximity to FDIC and the IMF is also a big player.

Because of restrictive zoning, there are no skyscrapers in the D.C. Metro area.  The tallest building is the Washington Monument.

The tallest office building (12 floors) in D.C. is One Franklin Square (1301 K Street NW) which is close to 600,000 sq. ft. in total.

Next is 700 Eleventh Street is another 12 story building measuring out at 302,000 sq ft of commercial space

Last is 1090 Vermont Avenue NW, also 12 floors but only 160,000 sq. ft.

The main cities comprising the D.C. Metropolitan Area include:  Arlington VA, Alexandria VA, Baltimore MD, Bethesda MD, Fairfax VA, Frederick MD, Gaithersberg MD, Reston VA, Rosslyn VA, Silver Springs MD, and Tysons Corner MD.

Capital One Tower (1680 Capital One Drive, Tysons VA) is a relatively new skyscraper that is 31 floors and comprises 940,500 square feet of floor area.  Clearly you have to get out of DC to build any bulk!

In Arlington, 1812 North Moore Street is a 580,000 sq. ft. , 35 floor building located at Rosslyn Metro Center.

In Baltimore MD, Transamerica Tower is the one to beat.  It is a 40 story skyscraper comprising 530,000 sq. ft. of floor space

The Chevy Chase Bank East Tower at 7501 Wisconsin Ave. in Bethesda MD is a 15 floor building that is 696,500 sq. ft.
