Chelsea Facts

The Chelsea neighborhood runs from the Hudson River to Sixth Avenue, from 14th Street to the 30th Street border of the Penn Plaza/Garment District.  Earlier, Chelsea was predominantly ramshackle residences & hotels with industrial and manufacturing space.  Much of the residences and hotels have been recently renovated and the neighborhood’s industrial and manufacturing space has been completely converted to office use.  Chelsea is a major location for the New York City technology and startup wave.  Google’s second largest office is in Chelsea at 14th Street and 8th Avenue – which is on the heart of the dark fiber upgrade that Verizon has routed throughout the city.

There is no physical Silicon Alley anymore, but it started in the area near the Flatiron Building (175 Fifth Avenue), close to Madison Square Park.  Now, the “Alley” is the general corridor running from the Flatiron building and Union Square, down to SoHo.  Today the tech scene is all over Manhattan and the Boroughs.

The most famous Chelsea tourist attraction is The High Line which is a renovated elevated train trestle that has been turned into a beautiful public park running along Tenth avenue through most of Chelsea.

Chelsea Market near Google’s campus,  and Chelsea Piers at 23rd Street are two other famous locations.  The art scene is vibrant here through many galleries and there is a truly eclectic assortments of restaurants to choose from.  This is a walkers and people watchers paradise.

Tech workers cut a broad swath across all employment in New York City.  You start with the jobs in actual tech industries (a good example would be a computer programmer working at Facebook), then you’ve got all of the ancillary jobs still in the tech industry that are non tech jobs (like sales or marketing jobs in a tech firm.  Last, you’ve got all of the tech jobs in non tech industries – an example of which would be a website developer at a bank or financial institution.
