Penn Plaza/Garment Facts

The Penn Plaza/Garment District is located proximate to Pennsylvania Station.  It is bordered north and south between 30th Street and 35th Street, between Fifth Avenue and the Hudson River.  In addition to Penn Station, Madison Square Garden is probably the most highly trafficked destination.  Macy’s is also a retail destination that anchors many national brands up and down 34th Street.

One Penn Plaza and Two Penn Plaza are the largest and most modern buildings in this neighborhood.  This area is also home to the first vertical mall in the US (Manhattan Mall).

In addition to shopping and a sports venue, there are of course many restaurants – but the primary popularity of this neighborhood stems from its roots as one of the five most heavily used public transportation areas in New York City.

The neighborhood was scarred by the demolition of the original Pennsylvania Station in the 60’s which made room for the horrible excuse for a transport terminal that Penn Station is today.  For 10 years there have been talks about revitalizing the area, with several different plans.  The biggest player is Vornado Realty which owns close to 7 million square feet of office space in the area including One Penn Plaza and Two Penn Plaza.  They also own the Hotel Pennsylvania which is rumored to become a supertall office tower.  They are also redeveloping the Farley Post Office Building into the Moynihan Train Hall.

This neighborhood is graced by the ongoing construction of a completely new adjacent neighborhood at Hudson Yards – so we’ve drawn a line of demarcation at 10th Avenue to delineate the new neighborhood that was formerly Penn Plaza but is now big enough to be considered its own submarket of New York City.
